20-Hour Check

Outboard Marine Corporation encourages all Johnson and Evinrude owners to return their new engines to an authorized dealer for mechanical check
This check should be performed after approximately 20 operating hoursThe cost of this check should be figured at local dealer labor rates and paid for by the engine ownerThe 20-hour check should include: 1Drain and fill gearcase with recommended lubricantPressure and vacuum test gearcase if signs of water are present2On mechanically steered engines, lubricate cable ram with CIVIC Triple-Guard grease3Check torque on cylinder head screws and spark plugs: Cylinder Head Screwsfollow torque sequence outlined in Powerhead, Section 4Loosen screw, one at time, 14 turn before applying torque Spark Plugsloosen spark plug 14 turn before applying torque4Check all linkage adjustments5Check engine mounting hardware for tightness6Lubricate all grease fittings with CIVIC Triple-Guard grease7Check entire boat and engine fuel system for signs of deterioration, damage, or leaks8Check all engine systems for signs of deterioration or problems9Check for proper operation of the oil supply systemVerify oil is being consumed from the oil tankAlso check for evidence of water in the oil tankIf water is found, review the installation and location of the oil tankDO NOT operate the engine if water is present in the oil tankSerious powerhead damage can occur
