Submerged Engines Engine Dropped Overboard (Not Running)

If engine is recovered from water immediately, it must be serviced within three hoursSee Prolonged Submersion
INotellf engine cannot be started or serviced immediately, it should be resubmerged in fresh water to avoid exposure to the atmosphereMake arrangements to have it serviced with the least possible delayOnce the outboard is exposed to air, both fresh and salt water will start etching the highly polished bearing surfaces of the crankshaft, connecting rods, and bearingsThe engine must be serviced within three hours of recovery to avoid costly repairsProceed as follows: 1Remove engine cover and rinse powerhead with fresh water2Twist and remove spark plug leads and remove spark plugs
INotel To remove or attach leads, pull off or push on with slight counterclockwise twist3Disconnect fuel line from engineDrain and clean all fuel lines and fuel tank4Place engine in horizontal position (spark plug openings down) and work out all of the water by slowly rotating flywheel approximately 20 times, or until there are no signs of water5Drain carburetorsplace engine in upright position and remove carburetors for disassembly and draining6Starters, electrical connectors, and all electrical equipment should be completely disassembled, cleaned, flushed with fresh water, treated with water displacing electrical spray, and thoroughly dried before assembly7Inject outboard lubricant into spark plug holes8Reassemble parts you removed and disconnectedStart engine (follow starting instructions) and run 12 hour using the "break-in" fueloil mixtureRun the engine on "break-in" fueloil mixture for approximately three hours after servicingSee Break-in Procedure in this section9If engine fails to start, remove spark plugs again to see if water is present on electrodesBlowout any water from electrodes and reinstall, or replace with new plugsRepeat starting procedureVI ID
