18Press the detent lever down to engage REVERSE (lowest) positionThis will provide clearance to install the clutch shaft assembly
19Note the position of the locati ng pi at the front of the housingThe pin must engage corresponding recess inside the nose of the gearcase
20Tip the rear of gearcase slightly downwardThis will help hold the housing, washer, bearing, and gear together, as well as keep the detent lever in the depressed positionInstall the clutch shaft assemblyMake sure the locating pin is properly engaged after the assembly is installed21Lubricate two new shift rod cover a-rings with OMC Tripe-Guard greaseInstall the a-rings into the shift rod cover
22Place the shift rod grommet and shift rod spacer on the shift rodGrease the threaded end of the shift rod and insert it through the coverTurn the shift rod while pushing it through the cover to avoid damaging the a-rings23Apply OMC Gasket Sealing Compound to both sides of new shift rod cover gasket Position the gasket on the gearcaseThread the shift rod into the detent lever about four turns24Move shift rod from side to side while pushing on the clutch shaft to ensure proper alignment of the bearing housing locator pin into the locator pin hole in the gearcaseCOA3568
