5Remove the retaining ring, and lift the pawl and links as an assembly

7Hold the pulley in the starter housing while turning the starter over, right side upHold fingers clear of the pulley, and jar the starter housing against bench to dislodge the rewind spring and pulleyCleaning and Inspection

1Wash metal components in solvent and dry with compressed air2Inspect the rewind spring for cracked or broken end loops3Examine the pawl for wear, and inspect the links4Remove starter rope from pulleyInspect rope and replace if frayed Cut new rope 59 in(150 cm) longFuse '2 in(12 mm) of both ends and pull through towel to make threading rope through holes easier5Examine the pulley and the starter housingLook for sharp edges and rough surfaces that could fray the starter rope File and polish to remove 6Examine starter lockout partsReplace any worn or damaged partsAssembly
