11Reach inside the gearcase and remove the pinion and pinion nutRemove any loose needle bearings that might interfere with removal of the forward gear

Push down on the shift rod to engage REVERSE gearUnthread the shift rod from the detent leverRemove the six screws, shift rod, and cover assembly from the gearcaseDiscard the cover gasketRemove and discard the two O-rings from inside the cover13Remove the propeller shaft assembly from the gearcaseCOB3111
14To remove the clutch dog pin retaining spring, begin by locating one end of it and then, with small screwdriver, pry the end of the spring out of the grooveContinue to work your way along the spring, prying it out of the groove, until its entire length is out of the groove

15Push the clutch dog pin out with small screwdriver and separate the propeller shaft from the forward bearing housing and remove the clutch dog from the propeller shaftDiscard the clutch dog pin retaining spring 16Remove the forward gearthrust bearingand thrust washer from the forward bearing housing and clean and inspect the partsRemove the 25 forward gear needle bearings from the bearing housing17Push downward on the dete,nt lever that the shift rod was threaded into until it "snaps" into its lowest position, then remove the shifter shaft and cradle 18Slide out the shift lever pinCOB3109
