Disassembly Wear safety glasses while disassembling and assembling manual starters because of rewind spring tension& rn rn

1Pull the starter rope out far enough to tie slip knot in the ropePry the starter rope anchor out of the handle Remove the handle, release the slip knot, and ease the pulley back until the rewind spring if fully unwound2Remove the spindle screw nut

4Remove the two retaining rings CD and lift both pawls, links, and friction plate as an assemblyRemove the spindle bushing Q) and shim
5Hold the pulley in the starter housing while turning the starter over, legs downHold fingers clear ofthe pulley and jar the starter housing against bench to dislodge the rewind spring and pulleyCleaning and Inspection 1Wash metal components in solvent and dry with compressed air2Inspect the rewind, spring for broken end loops and weak tension3Examine the pawls for wear4Inspect the friction plate, spindle, and links5Inspect starter ropeReplace rope if frayedCut nut rope to 73112 in(186,6 cm) in lengthFuse ends of rope to length of '2 in (12 mm)6Examine the pulley and the starter housingLook for sharp edges and rough surfaces that could fray the starter ropeFile and polish to remove7Inspect the starter spring shield for wear8Examine starter lockout partsReplace any worn or damaged parts0649 0646
