The driveshaft to pinion taper is locking taperIf necessary, use OMC Puller, PIN 390706and OMC Backing Plate, PIN 325867 CD, to break the lockInstall the tools as shown by clamping them around the driveshaft with the tool's set screw aligned with the water pump drive cam slotThen, tighten the set screw into the slotAlternately tighten the two vertical screws against the backing plate inserted between the puller and the gearcase until the driveshaft pops loose from the pinion, then remove the toolsf81 9The bearing housing Q), shimsthrust bearing Cb), and thrust washers will come out with the driveshaft

19l 10Reach inside the gearcase and take out the pinion, nut, and any loose needle bearings that may have fallen into the gearcase11Pushdown on the shift rodThis will move the detent lever downward to clear the inside of the gearcase when the propeller shaft assembly is pulled outr;(il 12Completely unscrew the shift rod, but do not pull it out of the shift rod coverRemove the six cover screws, then lift off the shift rod and cover assemblyDiscard the gasket underneath depress the detent leverWhile holding the detent lever down, pull the clutch shaft and bearing housing assembly out of the gearcaseIf the detent lever is not held in the fully depressed position, it will pop up when the clutch shaft is pulled and prevent removal of the clutch shaft and bearing housing assembly
