Manual Starter Servicing3, 4 Removal 1Remove upper engine cover
i twist and remove spark plug leads

2To avoid accidental starting of engine while servicing,

[!] 3Remove three screws retaining starter housingill this time because starter spring will disengage and unwind
forciblyStarter Rope Replacement 1Pull out starter rope and tie slipknot to relieve spring tension while removing handleUntie knot in end of rope and remove handle and bumperrJl2Pull starter rope out to limitHold pulley firmly so it will not rewind and release slipknotWhile still holding pulley firmly, remove rope by pulling knotted end of rope from pulleyCarefully allow pulley to slowly rotate until it is fully unwound3Cut new rope to length of 59'2 in(151 em)Fuse both endsKnot one end of rope4Wind spring by turning pulley 4112 turns counterclockwise and hold in place5While holding pulley from unwinding, insert unknotted rope end into hole in pulley, thread around pulley and out the hole in the starter housingPull the rope until knot bottoms in pulley6While holding free end of rope outside starter housing, release pulley and allow spring to begin winding rope onto pulley7When there is still approximately 12 in(30 em) of rope outside the starter housing, tie slipknot in the rope to hold in place8Install bumper and handle onto ropeTie knot in end of ropeInsert knotted end of rope into handle9Release knot and ease starter pulley back53074
