Reach inside the gearcase and remove the pinion and pInion nut V6Remove any loose needle bearings that might interfere with removal of the forward gear
Push down on the shift rod to engage REVERSE gear positionUnthread the shift rod from the detent leverRemove the six screws, shift rod, and cover assembly from the gearcaseDiscard the cover gasketRemove and discard the O-ring from inside the cover15Remove the propeller shaft assembly from the gearcase

f171 16Insert small screwdriver under one end of the clutch dog spring and remove it from the groove by unwrapping it from around the clutch dog Discard the spring r:j8l 17Push the pin out ofthe clutch dogThe bearing housing assembly will now pull out of the end of the propeller shaft and the clutch dog will slide off the splines
Pull the forward gearthrust bearingand thrust washer off the bearing housing down on the detent lever to make sure it's in the most depressed positionLift out the shift shaft and cradle
