15Move shift rod from side-to-side while pushing on the propel ler shaft to ensure proper alignment of the bearing housing locator pin into the locator pin hole in the gearcaseGently tap the end of the propeller shaft with plastic or rawhide mallet to fully seat the bearing housing55 16Apply OMC Gasket Sealing Compound to the threads of the shift rod cover screwsInstall the screwsTighten the screws to torque of 60-84 inIbs(7-9 Nm)1561 17Position the driveshaft thrust bearingwasherand shim(s) (selected earlier) on the driveshaft INotel Position items, and exactly in order shown57158 18Lightly apply OMC Gasket Sealin9, Compound to the gearcase area that contacts mounting flange of the bearing housingDo not coat inside bearing housing bore surface of the gearcaseUsing OMC Driveshaft Seal Protector PIN 312403, slide the driveshaft bearing housing onto the driveshaft19Install the pinion and the driveshaft as follows: Pull up on the shift rod to engage the FORWARD gear position Degrease tapers of the pinion and the driveshaftInstall the pinion and the driveshaft in the gearcase Using OMC Pinion Nut Holder PI 320675, start the pinion nut onto the driveshaft While holding the pinion nut with an 11 16 in open-end wrench and the driveshaft with OMC Driveshaft Holding Socket PIN 334995, tighten the pinion nut to torque of 40-45 ftIbs(54-60 Nm)Pad handle of the wrench to prevent damage to the gearcaseOvertorquing or undertorquing of the pinion nut will reduce pinion lifeIf application of proper torque causes nut to "strip" do not use nutReplace with new pinion nut
