Disassembly 1Remove the propeller and mounting hardwareInspect the propeller for spun hub

J'1l 2Drain the gearcaseRemove the oil level plugthen the oil

plugsInspect this magnet for the presence of metal chipsIf you do find chips on the magnet, they must be steel and must have come from one of the gears, bearings, or shafts within the gearcase, so make note for future reference while inspecting the internal componentsThe plug with the magnet must be installed in its original positionAlso, inspect the lubricant for water or burned odorWater in the lubricant will give it milky appearanceOverheating will give the lubricant black color and burned odor
3Remove the propeller shaft housing retainers:
Remove the four propeller housing screws using 38 inth in wa II socketor Remove the two SCrews and retainers4Remove the propeller shaft bearing housing from the gearcase: V4 modelsUse two OMC Puller Legs PIN 316982 and the puller body from OMC Universal Puller PIN 378103 to pull the housing from the gearcase V6 modelsUse two OMC Propeller Shaft Bearin9 Housing Pullers PIN 330278 and the puller body from OMC Universal Puller PIN 378103 to pull the housing from the gearcase5If equipped, remove the two retaining rings using OMC Retaining Ring Pliers PIN 331045Retaining rings are under extreme pressure during removal and installationWear safety glasses and proceed with care to avoid unsnapping ring from pliersAfter the retaining rings are removed far enough from the gearcase to clear the housing, release pliers tension while the retaining ring is still around the propeller shaft
