Manual Starter ServicingDeluxe Replacement of Starter Rope
1To avoid accidental starting of engine while servicing, twist and remove all spark plug leads
r:tl 2Pull the starter rope out far enough to tie slip knot in the rope behind starter handleUntie knot in end of rope and remove the handle and rubber bumper
3Release the slip knot while holding the pulley, and allow the starter spring to slowly unwind
Unwrap starter rope from pulleyRotate pulley until knot aligns with window of idler gear arm
5 Remove and discard rope from pulley 6Cut new rope to length of 59112 in(151 cm)Fuse both ends7Engage idler gear with flywheel and lock in positionusing OMC Spring Winder PI 383967 Position the tool in lower engine cover along side of idler arm Turn thumbscrew CD provided with tool into hole of idler arm, making sure idler gear is fully engaged into flywheel8Rotate flywheel clockwise four turns to preload springTurn flywheel clockwise until hole in pulley aligns with window of idler gear arm 9Knot one end of rope With opposite endfeed rope through window of idler gear arm Using pick or small screwdriver, feed rope out of pulley10Seat knot of rope in pulley cavityFeed rope clockwise in pulley, above the rope guide and through eyelet of lower engine cover
