Starter Servicing, 9.915 Replacement of Starter Rope If the starter rope is broken, remove and disassemble the starter to inspect the condition of the rewind spring
1To avoid accidental starting of engine while servicing, twist and remove all spark plug leads
2Pull the starter rope all the way out to expose the knot of rope in the pulleyUsing screwdriver or pliers, lock the starter pinion into the flywheel
3Remove the bumper and handle from the starter ropeRemove and discard the starter rope from the pulley
4Cut new starter rope to length of 68 in(174 cm) and fuse ends of rope to length of in(12 mm) 5Knot one end of the new starter ropeThread starter rope through hole in pulley and eyelet in lower engine cover 53074
6Insert starter rope through the bumper and handleTie knot in the rope as shown Seat the knot in the cavity of the handle7Remove the tool holding the starter pinion to the flywheelAllow the starter rope to rewind normallyRemoval '" 1To avoid accidental starting of engine while servicing, twist and remove all spark plug leads
