Driveshaft Shimming Using Tool PIN 320739 The driveshaft pinion is precisely meshed with the forward and reverse gears by the use of shim or shims between the driveshaft bearing and driveshaft seal housingWhen installing new bearing and cone assembly, pinion, or seal housing, it will be necessary to gauge and select the proper shims to restore factory clearance
INoteDegrease pinion and driveshaft tapers prior to assembly1The driveshaft bearing and cone must be installed on the driveshaftClean the driveshaft, bearing, and cone in clean solvent and dry thoroughlyAssemble the pinion to the driveshaft and tighten the pinion nut to torque of 40-45 ftIbs(54-60 Nm)2Place OMC Shim Gauge PI 320739 in vise as shownmm) of drives haft shimsClean the shims in solvent and dry thoroughlyCarefully measure shims using micrometerPosition the shims between the bearing cone and shim gauge as shown Measure the clearance between the top of the shim gauge and the pinion using feeler gauge while pressing down on the driveshaft to seat the bearing in the cup5Subtract the measurement obtained with the feeler gauge from the total measurement of shims between the bearing cone and shim gaugeUse amount of shims to give zero clearance6Carefully set aside the correct shim selected Remove the nut and the pinion from the driveshaftCheck all shims with micrometer before installing
