9Remove the pinion and driveshaft from the gearcase as follows: Pull up on the shift rod to engage FORWARD gear position Using OMC Driveshaft Holding Socket PIN 316612 and an 1116 inopen-e'nd wrench, back the pinion nut off the driveshaft until the nut contacts the clutch dogPad the handle of the wrench to prevent damage to the gearcase Pull up on the driveshaft until the pinion nut contacts the pinion againThe driveshaft to pinion taper is locking taperIf necessary, use OMC Puller PIN 387206 CD and OMC Backing Plate PIN 325867 Q) to break the lockInstall the tools as shown by clamping them around the driveshaft with the tool 's set screw aligned with the impeller drive cam slot and then tighten the set screw into the slotAlternately tighten the two vertical screws against the backing plateinserted between the puller and the gearcase until the driveshaft pops loose from the pinion Finish removing the pInion nut from the driveshaftRemove the driveshaft with the driveshaft seal housingbearing cone (0, and shims(s) from the gearcaseReach inside the gearcase and remove the pinion 15 10down on the rod to engage REYERSE gear positionUnthread the shift rod from the shifter detentRemove the four screws, shift rod, and cover assembly from the gearcaseDiscard the cover gasketRemove and discard the 0ring from inside of the coverNoteShifter detent must be in the REVERSE gear position to provide necessary clearance to remove the propeller shaft
