Removal of Starter MotorAll Modelsill Disconnect the battery cables at the battery
2Disconnect the positive battery cable at the starter motorOn 155 modelsremove the negative battery cable from the starter motor mounting flange3If necessary remove the air silencer from the powerhead
4Remove the three screws with lockwashers retaining the starter motor to the powerhead
Disassembly of Starter MotorAll Models
1Observe alignment marks on commutator end cap and drive end cap for correct reassemblyRemove two thru bolts from starter motor2Tap the commutator end cap and carefully remove it to prevent the loss of four springs under the two ground brushes and insulated brushes3Tap the drive end cap to loosen it and pull armature from the frame You will find that the permanent magnets in the frame will resist removal of the armature4If necessary to remove pinionuse strap wrench to hold armatureRemove locknutspaceranti-drift spring CDpiniondrive end cap and thrust washer Q) from armature Discard locknut as it loses its locking feature once removed
