13Reach inside the gearcase and remove the pinion14Unthread the sh ift rod from the shifter detentRemove the six screws, shift rod and cover assembly from the gearcaseDiscard the cover gasketRemove and discard the O-ring from inside the cover15Remove the filldrain plug from the gearcaseRemove the propeller shaft assembly from the gearcase
Remove the filldrain plug before removing the propeller shaft assembly to avoid breaking the filldrain plug magnet16Remove the pinion bearing from the gearcase as followsRemove this bearing only if replacement is necessary Remove the screw retaining the water intake screens to the gearcaseRemove the screens using care not to break tabs on top of the screensRemove the pinion bearing retaining screwDiscard the O-ring from the screwAssemble the fo llowing components of OMC Special Tool PIN 391257 (Universal Pinion Bearing Remover and Installer), Flange Nut PIN 326586 Plate PIN 391260 and Rod PIN 326582 Insert these components into the gearcase and through the pinion bearing
