7Remove the two retaining rings using OMC Special Tool PIN 311879 (Retaining Ring Pliers)Retaining rings are under '" extreme pressures during removal and installationWear safety glasses and proceed with care to avoid unsnapping ring from pliersAfter the retaining rings are removed far enough from the gearcase to clear the housingrelease the pliers while the retaining ring is still around the propeller shaftIt is necessary to modify the nose of the retaining ring pliers to securely hold the rings8Remove the retainer plate from the gearcase
9Remove the thrust washer reverse gear from the gearcase

10Remove the four driveshaft bearing housing screws with washers11Pull up on the shift rod Q) to engage the clutch dog into fo rward gear positionThis will provide necessary clearance to remove the pinion nut12Remove the pinion nut from the bottom of the driveshaft by using OMC Special Tool PI 311875 (Driveshaft Holding Socket) and 78" open-end wrench Pad the handle of the wrench to prevent damage to the gearcase 13Pull up on the driveshaft to remove it from the gearcase The driveshaft to pinion taper is locking taperIf necessaryuse OMC Special Tool PI 390706 (Puller) and OMC Special Tool PIN 325867 (Backing Plate) to break the lockInstall the tools as shown by clamping them around the driveshaft with the set screw aligned with the water pump drive pin flat and then tightening the set screw against the shaftAlternately tighten the two vertical screws against the backing plate inserted between the puller and the gearcase until the driveshaft pops loose from the pinion14The bearing housing ,shimsthrust bearing and thrust washer will come out with the driveshaftRemove and discard the O-ring from the bearing housing
