5-7 UPPER MAIN BEARING AND OIL SEAL Install upper main bearing through bottom of crankcasePress against lettered side bearing case until bearing is recessed 1 16" (1.5 below finish thrust face of crankcaseAvoid 10ss of np.edles in upper main bearingInstall oil seal, lip down until flush with top of crankcasePISTON INST ALLA TION Coat piston and cylinder bore with oil and install piston and connecting rod assembly through crankcasePush piston through cylinder until piston r.ing grooves are exposedThe il1take side of the piston deflector must placed toward the intake portSee Figure 5-19PISTON RINGS Install the piston rings pistonSpread each ring with ring expander just enough to slip it over the head of the piston and down into placeSee Figure 5-20sure the rings fit freely in the piston ring groovesThe ring grooves are pinned to secure the position of the rings primarily to prevent ends of the rings from catching the edges of the ports in the cylinder, but also to assure staggering of the ring gapsCarefully press piston and rings into cylinder bore until head of piston is flush with top of cylinderNOTE Do not press beyond this point or lower ring will lock into recess at bottom of cylinder boreDamaged piston and broken piston rings result from imperfect alignment of the ring groove and the piston dowel pinsRemove connecting rod CONNECTING ROD If removed, replace needle bearing line rs in cOl1l1ectil1g rod al1d The lil1er with the hole goes il1 the rod
