DESCRIPTION The gear drive starter is design employing the principles of automotive type startersThe nylon pinion gear slides upward and engages the flywheel ring gear as the starter rope is pulled, and automatically disengages when the motor startsThe ratio between the pinion gear and the ring gear has been selected to provide maximum cranking speed with minimum pulling effort to ensure fast, easy startingSee Figures 8-1 and 8-2A lockout pawl linked to the camfollower prevents manual starter engagement if throttle is advanced beyond start position
