5-4 bRemove exhaust cover and gasket by removing the cover plate screwsSee Figures 5-55-4cStraighten out the lock plate tabs which are bent up against the connecting rod cap screwsE:)NOTE If tabs are broken off it is very important that they are found so

that in reassembly they do not remain in the enginethe connecting rod cap screwsSee Figure 5-6dRemove connecting rod cap and 30 needle bearingsneedlesFigure 5-5Exhaust Cover Removed

Remove Avoid loss of

eRemove four screws and lower main bearing and seal housingSee Figure 5-7The lower main bearing and seal are not serviced separatelyIf bearing or seal are damaged, entire assembly must be replacedfRemove crankshaft through bottom of crankcase
gReinstall rod cap on rod See Figure 5-16Push piston through cylinder (toward cylinder head end) until piston rings are exposedRemove piston ringsSee Figure 5-7ARemove piston and rod through front (carburetor end) of crankcaseDO NOT try to save the ringsInstall set of new rings on every power head service jobhIf ne cessary to remove piston from connecting rod, remove wrist pin retaining rings, using needle-nose pliersSee Figure 5-8Drive wrist pin through to free piston from connecting rodSee Figure 5-9CNOTE Figure 5-6Connecting Rod Lock Tabs and Screws One side of piston is marked "L" on insideWhen wrist pin is to be removed, "L" side of piston must be up and driving tool must be applied to loose endBe careful not to distort pistonSee Figure 5-10iUpper main bearing and seal can be removed by supporting crankcase properly and pushing out with suitable tool
