INSTALLING PROPELLER SHAFT AND SHIFT ASSIST ASSEMBLIES IN GEARCASE aPlace gear case on bench with port side facing upSee Figure 6-91 bWith flat side of plunger and keyway faCing up, insert propeller shaft into gearcase and oil pump as far as it will goSee Figure 6-92With slot in power shift assist valve assembly faCing propeller end of gear case (aft) and flat surface and key on push rod faCing down, carefully insert push rod and assist cylinder assembly into gearcase until contact is made with plungerAssist valve and plunger cannot be rotated when properly engaged (flat to flat)With gentle downward pressure on assist cylinder and valve assembly, carefully ease propeller shaft back to engage plunger keyway with push rod keyThe gentle downward pressure on shift assist assembly will help push rod key slip into plunger keywayWhen alignment is reached, push propeller shaft and shift assist assembly into complete engagementSee Figure 6-92At this point assist valve and push rod cannot be rotated indicating correct engagementASSEMBLING GEARCASE REMAINING COMPONENTS IN
