5CHECKING FOR SPARKUse spark checking device, such as needle type spark gap checker (see Figure 4-7) to check for spark at the plug leadsSpark must jump 38" gap on needle type spark checkerIf sparking does not occur while cranking engine, proceed with following checksIf sparks are apparent, proceed to "CHECKING TIMING 6CHECKING PULSE PACKRemove pulse pack purple lead from terminal #9Connect low reading ammeter between the pulse pack purpleblack stripe lead and terminal #9See Figure 4-8With key switch in "ON" position, ammeter must show minimum current drawMaximum current draw should be .7 amperesIf engine runs, current draw at 4500 RPM should be between 15 to 2.5 amperesIf readings are too high or too low, replace pulse pack
