Check crankshaft seals for excessive wearSeal rings should fit snugly in cylinder block and crankcase, and should form tight seal around crankshaft websNOTE: Seal rings are marked for correct fitSee Page 5-13BEARINGS aAll areas where the bearings are to be serviced should be kept free from accumulations of oil and dirt to avoid damage to the bearingsDO NOT spin ball or roller bearings before they are cleaned, as dirt in the raceways may cause serious damagebPlace bearings in wire basket and immerse in solvent such as SolvasolThe tank should have screened false bottom to prevent settlings from being stirred up into the bearingsAgitate basket frequently until grease, oil, and sludge are thoroughly loosened and can be flushed outBearings that contain especially heavy carbon deposits or hardened grease should be soaked in separate container of solventcUSing spray gun with air filter and clean solvent, flush each bearing until all dirt and residue are removedTurn one of the races slowly while flushing to help dislodge dirt from around balls and separator pocketsBlow solvent out of bearings, using dry, filtered air, being careful not to spin bearings by force of airdSince dry bearings rust rapidly, lubricate them at once in light, clean oilRotate them few times and, after draining the excess oil, place them in covered container until reassemblyeDiscard bearings which show any of the following: (1) Rusted balls, rollers, or raceways(2) Fractured ringThis may be caused by forcing cocked bearing off shaft, or by too heavy press fit851 150
