CRANKSHAFT BEARINGS AND SEALS aAll areas where the bearings are to be serviced should be kept free from accumulations of oil and dirt to avoid contaminating the bearingsbPlace bearings in wire basket and immerse in solvent such as SolvasolTank should have screened false bottom to prevent settlings from being stirred up into the bearingsAgitate basket frequently until grease, oil, and sludge are thoroughly loosened and can be flushed outBearings that contain especially heavy carbon deposits or hardened grease should be soaked in separate container of solventcUsing spray gun with air filter and clean solventflush each bearing until all dirt and residue are removedBlow solvent out of bearings, using dry, filtered air, being careful not to spin bearings by force of airdSince dry bearings rust rapidly, lubricate them at once in light, clean oilRotate them few times and, after draining the excess oil, place them in covered container until inspectioneDiscard bearings which show any of the following: (1) Rusted rollers or raceways(2) Fractured ringThis may be caused by forcing cocked bearing off shaft, or by too heavy press fit(3) Worn, galled, or abraded surfacesThese may be caused by too loose fit, or bearing locked by dirt and turning on shaft or in housing(4) Badly discolored rollers and racesThis is usually due to an inadequate supply of lubricantModerate discoloration is not cause for discardfReplace top crankcase bearing seal and "0" gLower crankcase seal should be replaced and any parts of this assembly should be replaced if damaged or wornZ0 4
