LEVER assembly of the lower unit, it is necessary to check the gear shift adjustmentThe shifter dog should engage the forward and reverse gears perly and take free position when in neutralcheck, place shift handle in neutral and check to see that rotates freelyFigure 6-23Steering Friction Move shift handle into forward gear, rotating clockwise to engage shifter dog with forward gearNote point of engagement, and note point where shift lever pin rides in forward detent in shifter lockRepeat action for reverse gearThe shifter lever pin should stop equal distance from the neutral detent but closer to neutral in forward gear to allow for positive forward gear engagementIf adjustment is needed, loosen the shift handle clamp and adjustment screwsSee Figure 6-21Adjust shift handle as required, tighten screws, and recheck adjustment
