DESCRIPTION The battery ignition system, 80HP on the Speedifour and Starflite are similar to an automobile ignition systemThey consist of battery, ignition coil, distributor, and spark plugsDISTRIBUTOR The distributor consists of the condenser, double breaker point arrangement, and rotor and cap for distributing the high voltage to the spark plugsThe distributor cam has two lobes 180 apart and the breaker points are located 90 apart on the breaker plate, thus interrupting the current through the ignition coil four times in each revolutionThe distributor cam and pulley are driven by timing belt which synchronizes the distributor with the crankshaftSee Figure 4-1A0 0

SPARK PLUGS Spark plugs having the proper heat range are very important for peak operation of the motorEvinrude motors are designed to operate with M42K, J4J, or A21X spark plugsSpark plugs are classified according to the temperatures at which they are designed to operate, HOT or COLDSee Figure 4-2The correct spark plug depends on the type of service to which it is subjectedUnless the spark plug is properly suited to the motor, trouble may arise, which might be interpreted as carburetor difficultyVery low trolling speeds will tend to foul plugs due to the oil not burning from the coreHowever, at full throttle with hotter plug, the operating temperature may be too high, resulting in pre-ignitionAn extreme temperature range will be difficult to
