cCheck synchronization of carburetor and distributor linkage as described in Section 4 bStart engineNOTE Allow engine to reach normal operating temper;ture by running in tank with test propeller at one-half throttle or slightly more at least minutes before proceeding to next stepcWith engine in gear, run briefly at full hrottle to clear crankcase and cylindersRetard throttle to fast idle position (700 to 750 rpm) Slowly lean one low-speed needle valve by turning clockwise until engine hesitates or spits slightly; then enrich needle valve by turning counterclockwise until motor runs fastest and smoothest performance is obtainedNOTE Since it is almost impossible to detect minor speed changes in the V-4 engine, tachometer must be used to obtain proper adjustmentUse one throughout the adjusting proceduredIf engine speed increases, reset throttle so engine speed is 700 to 750 rpmAdjust second lowspeed needleeReplace low-speed knobs in normal position without disturbing positions of needles Adjust idle adjustment screw so that motor idles 650 rpm IN GEARADJUSTING AUTOMATIC CHOKE aThe automatic choke may require adjustment for leaner mixture in warm climates and possible for richer mixture in cold climatesProper adjustment of the choke will assure easy starting and improve overall operation of the motor at slower speeds during the warm-up periodbBefore disturbing the original factory setting, scribe mark on the choke housing to serve as reference to the original setting
