FORWARD DRIVE SHAFT (CLOCKWISE)
With the shift lever in reverse the shift clutch engages reverse gearturning the propeller counterclockwiseFigure 12
Disassembly
1Drain gear housing as follows :
ADrain gear housing grease by removing drain plug located on lower starboard side of gear housing and "fill" and "ventscrews on upper portion of gear housing
FORWARD GEAR (ENGAGED)
BProbe drained gear lube with magnetSteel shavings mean possible abnormal wear in gears or shifting mechanismSHIFT CLUTCH
2Remove gear housing from motor leg as outlined in this section under water pump3Remove water pump as outlined in this section4Remove driveshaft spline seal and retainer from end of driveshaft5Remove gear housing cover from gear housing as follows: ARemove three (3) screws and lockwashersBTurn gear housing coverfigure 13Pull up on cover while rocking it back and forth until you can lift cover up and off driveshaft6Remove crush ring from bore in gear housing
