2Now hold end of test wire with tongs so that the wire is 1 4" from the center of the distributor rotor and spin the pulleyFigure 21 Figure 22Set-Up, Testing Distributor Cap Terminal Bases
Figure 21Testing RotorShaft Assembly
Remember to disconnect the spark plug wire for the terminal you're testingif not, strong spark across the gap between the test wire and the terminal base will result Figure 23
A couple of rubber bands can be used to pull the distributor cap clamps back out of the way 3A faint spark here is normal, but if strong spark occurs between the wire and the rotor, then the rotor is grounding out to the shaft and the rotor shaft assembly should be replaced In this casethe spark is going to ground rather than going through the wires to the plugs 4If no spark from end of wire to rotor is present, then check each of the distributor terminal bases in the cap one at time5Remove the spark plug wire from the plug on the term inal which you are testing Leave the other two connected This puts high resistance in the circuit and if there is leakage in the cap, it will force the secondary spark across the leakage pathFigure 22 6If you spin the pulley and hold the 12" spark plug wire you installed in the coil about 1 4" from the terminal base being testedyou should get very weak spark or none at all
