An operative preamplifier will give the following result: The voltmeter will go from volts to actual battery voltage and stay at that voltage reading until the opening in the rotor cup exposes the preamplifier at which time the voltage will drop back to zero NOTE
In most casespreamplifier is either good or bad (operative or inoperative)However, another condition has periodically developed whereby it will break down under load orwhen "warmed up" such as will happen with an ignition coilIn these instancesthe engine fault symptom will be that performance initially is good but then it will gradually "die or slow down" such as when running out of fuelGenerally, the engine will restart immediately, but when accelerated or held at steady higher speed, the "die" or "slow down" symptom reoccurs, usually with shorter duration of running between startupsThese tests will not disclose this condition
