9Get reading for shim thickness as follows:
1Mount lower gear housing in vise 2Install forward gear in housing 3Install thinnest thrust washer available in bore of forward gearFigure 31
APlace thumbs on top of bearing cage, fingers
under edge of gearBPull gear up hard until it stops Figure 30CCheck reading DSet gear back down to zero and repeat steps above until readings are the same 10Pick shims as follows :
Final dial reading must be .005 .001 because clearance needed for gear mesh is .005 .001 EXAMPLE
