Removal CAUTION
Always disconnect battery when working on engine 1Disconnect battery leads 2Remove two stop nuts securing starter to upper starter bracketFigure 53Remove one screw securing lower starter bracket to crankcase coverFigure 54Disconnect lead wire from starter (to starter relay) by removing hex nut from starter terminal Figure 55Remove starter from engine
2Connect another jumper cable to the negative terminal of the battery3Touch negative jumper cable to the frame of the starter motor and remove it4Pinion should move freely up and down the clutch when the negative jumper cable is on and off the starter frame 5If the pinion does not move freelydisassemble the starter motor drive and inspect it for dirt or damageTesting Starter Armature RotationRotate starter armature by handIf armature does not rotate freelybent armature or badly worn bearing may be causing it to bind Disassemble starter and inspect it for wear or damageDisassembly
