An operative preamplifier will give the following result: The voltmeter will go from volts to actual battery voltage and stay at that voltage reading until the opening in the rotor cup exposes the preamplifier at which time the voltage will drop back to zero NOTE
In most casespreamplifier is either good or bad (operative or inoperative)However, another condition has periodically developed whereby it will break down under load or when "warmed up" such as will happen with an ignition coilIn these instances, the engine fault symptom will be that performance initially is good but then it will gradually "di or slow down" such as when running out of fuelGenerally, the engine will restart immediately, but when accelerated or held at steady higher speed, the "die" or "slow downsymptom reoccurs, usually with shorter duration of running between startupsThese tests will not disclose this condition Distributor Rotor and CapTest Equipment: Spark Plug Wire 12" Long1Install the 12" piece of spark plug test wire in the coil again and spin the pulley: if there is good spark jumping the 1 2" gap between the end of the wire and groundremove the distributor capFigure 20
