RemovalTo remove the gear housing for further disassemblyproceed as follows :
AWARNING
Disconnect spark plug leads and ground them to support plate to prevent accidental starting of motor1Remove water pump
2Drain gear housing as follows :
ADrain gear housing grease by removing bothfillandventscrewsFigure 44Removing Propeller Shaft Seal
BProbe drained gear lube with magnetSteel
shavings present will indicate possible abno rmal wear in gears or shifting mechanism Remove bearing cage as follows :
A Remove two (2) hex socket head capsc rews
securing bearing cage assembly to gear housing lower
BInstall puller (special too NoT8948- 1) as shown in Figure 43 and remove bearing cage assembly
