SERVICING RemovalTo remove starter assembly proceed as follows :

BRemove remote throttle cable grommet from support plate to gain access to screws CRemove screws retaining lower starter bracketFigure 3
1Remove flywheel2Remove pinion gear and starter rewind spring as follows :

ARemove cap screw located in starter spoolFigure 2BThread rewind key (special tool T3139-1) in place of screw CRemove starter pinion pin Before pin is fully removed, hold rewind key preventing starter spring from unwinding abruptlyRemove pinallow spring to unwind slowlyPull spring from spoolDLift pinion gear from spool

Inspection and RepairAfter the starter assembly has been removed and disassembledwash all parts in cleaning solvent and inspect and repair the following :

1Inspect spool for wearCheck top of spool for burrs that would restrict pinion movement2Check pinion gear teeth for wear or breakage 3Remove starter interlock retaining screwremove interlock 4Inspect upper and lower starter bracket bearings for wearFigure 2Unwinding Starter Rewind Spring
