Subsection
C.DIGNITION SYSTEM
GENERAL
The information in this subsection is concerned with troubleshooting the ignition system and replacement of the electrical components
TROUBLESHOOTING
GeneralA malfunction in the C-O ignition will result in engine missing, surging or not running at allThese same symptoms can also be the result of insufficient, contaminated or excessive fuelFirst determine that the cause of the problem is not the fuel system See the Troubleshooting Guide for the fuel system on page 24 Test EquipmentTroubleshooting the C-O ignition system involves the use of special test equipmentFigure 5
DESCRIPTION
The magneto capacitor discharge (C-O) igniton system consists of six (6) major components: flywheel, C-O stator, trigger stator, stator ring and C-O module (two required), Figure 4
AWARNING
FLYWHEEL-l

To avoid possible shock hazardsdo not handle C-O modules or tester lead wires during testsPreliminary TestThe preliminary test will determine if there is enough voltage pres ent in the secondary wires to the spark plugs and if the plugs themselves are firing Proceed with test as follows1Clamp MM-1 clip over #1 spark plug wire and slide it down as close as possible to spark plug boot Spark plug wire remains connected to spark plug 2With T8953 C-O tester, connect coil lead to lead coming from MM-1 clip Connect coil lead to ground wire screw on exhaust port cover If tester lamp lights, cylinder is firing normally4Repeat test on remaining cylinderMerely unclip MM-1 clip from #1 lead and install on #2 and push reset button to put light out on C-O tester if it came on in previous check 5If light does not come on one or both of the cylindersrefer to the appropriate section for either failure on one or both cylindersDetermining The ProblemA problem in the C-O ignition system can be determined by following the systematic test procedures outlined in Table 1E u
