Subsection
_ GENERATING SYSTEM
GENERAL
The information in this subsection concerns troubleshooting and replacing the parts of the generating system
TROUBLESHOOTING
When diagnosing failure in the generating system, care must be taken to think of the system as wholePoor electrical connections in boat wiring, worn or cracked insulation of wires, corroded battery terminals, system overloading or neglectedimproperly serviced battery often give false impressions that problem exists within the motor when it does notA careful, visual inspection of the wiring should be made before resorting to meter testing
DESCRIPTIONThe generating system has partsflywheelstator, rectifier, circuit breaker and battery
Problem
Battery power insufficient to start engine
Possible Cause
1Battery terminals corroded
Test Procedure
1Clean terminals and cables Reconnect batteryIf this is not problemproceed with possible cause 22Test batterySee Battery Testing procedure (Section 4E) If battery checks goodproceed with possible cause 33Test boat wiring for short or damage Perform Test #1 If wiring is not the problem, proceed with possible cause 44AElectrical system overloaded with too many electrical accessories Perform Test #2 If accessory amperage draw is less than ampsproceed to 4B 4B Generating system producing insufficient current, perform Test #3 If stator output is good, proceed with possible cause 5
