GENERAL
The information in this subsection is concerned with troubleshooting the ignition system and replacement of the electrical components
TROUBLESHOOTING
GeneralA malfunction in C-O ignition will result in engine missing, surging or not running at allThese same symptoms can also be the result of insufficient, contaminated or excessive fuelFirst determine that the cause of the problem is not the fuel system See the Troubleshooting Guide for the fuel system Test EquipmentTroubleshooting the C-O ignition system involves the use of special test equipmentFigure 2
DESCRIPTION
The capacitor discharge (C-O) ignition system consists of four (4) major componentsdistributor, C-O module, coil and spark plugs, (4 required)

To avoid possible shock hazardsdo not handle C-O module or tester lead wires during tests Preliminary TestThe preliminary test determines if there is voltage present in the secondary wires to the spark plugs, using the 8978 timing light1Start engine (if engine will not starttest will have to be done by using starter)+IGNITION COIL DISTRIBUTOR
