Visually inspect the surface of the battery containerIf any signs of cracking or electrolyte leakage from the sides of the battery have occurredreplace the battery with new one If the battery terminals are found to be coated with rust or an acidic white powdery substance, use sandpaper to clean them Check the electrolyte leveland if necessary, add distilled water to raise the electrolyte levelfor each cell, to the UPPER LEVEL Use hydrometer to measure the electrolyte specific gravity readingIf the reading is 1.22 or less, as corrected to 20C (68F)this indicates that the battery needs to be rechargedSpecific gravity at 20C (68F) .2501.280 1.2201.250 Below 1.220 Condition Normal Under charged Run down Recharge Recharge or replace Measure

RECHARGING OPERATION
NOTE: When recharging, be sure to remove the battery from the vehicle to protect the regulatorirectifier against excessive voltage Use the following formula to correct the specific gravity reading to 20C (68F)S20St +0.0007 (t-20) Where S20corrected value of specific gravity (20C or 68F) Stvalue of specific gravity read at temperature tO 0.0007temperature coefficient of specific gravitytemperature in degrees centigrade at which st was read Check the corrected specific gravity reading with the chart to determine the recharging time in hoursThis is when constant-current charge at rate of 1.2 amperes (which is tenth of the capacity of the present battery) is used When recharging, do not allow the electrolyte temperature to exceed 45C (113 Interrupt the operation, as necessary, F)to let the electrolyte cool downu
