BODYSTEERINGSUSPENSION Steering Shaft Bearing Replacement
IMPORTANT: Replacement pivot tube assembly comes with new upper and lower bearings installedUse this procedure if replacing just the bearings only1234567Perform the "Steering Shaft Removal" procedureRemove the steering wheel cap and retaining nutPress steering shaft out of the steering wheel and pivot tubeNote the order and location of the washers and spacers between the steering wheel and pivot tubeDrive the bearings out of the pivot tube using drift punchInspect the pivot tube bearing surfaces for signs of excessive wear or damageApply Loctite 271TM (Red) to the outer circumference of the new lower bearing raceSlide the new lower bearing onto the steering shaft and install the steering shaft through the pivot tube9Reinstall the upper washers and spacers in the order in which they were removed
10Install the steering wheel and hand tighten the nut11Reinstall the steering shaft assembly in the vehicleInstall the lower portion of the steering shaft onto the steering gear box assembly (see Figure 5-16)Torque the lower pinch bolt to 30 ftlbs(41 Nm)12Install the (2) fasteners that retain the pivot tube (see Figure 5-17)Torque fasteners to 23 ftlbs(31 Nm)13Install the fastener retaining the upper portion of the steering wheel tilt shock to the pivot tube (see Figure 5-17)Torque fastener to ftlbs(10 Nm)14Be sure the front wheels are facing straight forwardRemove the steering wheel and align as neededTorque the steering wheel nut to 28 ftlbs(38 Nm)15Wipe the pivot tube clean of any excess Loctite16Install steering wheel cap and field test steering operation
