ELECTRICAL 4Measure the resistance between each commutator segment and the armature shaftThe reading should be infinite (no continuity)2345Install O-ring, two small phenolic spacers, large phenolic washer, flat washer, lock washer, and terminal nutWhile holding brush springs away from brushes, push brushes back and hold in placeSlide armature into field magnet housingRelease brushesLightly grease the drive roller bearing and reinstall drive end frame on armatureInspect seal for wear or damageReplace drive end cap if necessaryRoller Bearing Seal
Check commutator bars for discolorationBars discolored in pairs indicate shorted coils, requiring replacement of the starter motorPlace armature in growlerTurn growler on and position hacksaw blade or feeler gauge lengthwise 18" (.3 cm) above armature coil laminatesRotate armature 360 If hacksaw blade is drawn to armature on any pole, the armature is shorted and must be replaced6789
