Charging System Testing
Whenever charging system problems are suspected, proceed with the following system checks: Using volt meter, set it to read D.Cvolts, measure the battery open circuit voltage (across the positive and negative posts)Is the reading 12.4 volts or more? Yes Remove the battery and properly serviceReinstall the fully charged battery or fully charged shop battery
Meter Setting: DC Volts
With the transmission in neutral, start the engine and increase RPM to between 3000 and 4000Read battery voltage with the voltmeterVoltage readings should start to increase towards 13.0 D.CWas an increase noticed? No
Check for system current draw
Disconnect the wire connector between the regulatorrectifier and statorUsing volt meter perform stator output testSee the test procedure detailed in this chapter under StatorAlternator TestsDoes stator AC output meet specification? Yes
