ENGINE 5Loosen each of the four large cylinder base bolts 14 turn at time in criss-cross pattern until loose and remove bolts2Remove piston circlip and push piston pin out of pistonIf necessary, heat the crown of the piston slightly with propane torchCAUTION: Do not apply heat to the piston ringsThe ring may lose radial tensionRemove top compression ringNOTE: The bolts are inside the water jacket6Tap cylinder lightly with plastic hammer in the reinforced areas only until loose
Using piston ring pliers: Carefully expand ring and lift it off the pistonCAUTION: Do not expand the ring more than the amount necessary to remove it from the piston, or the ring may breakBy hand: Placing both thumbs as shown, spread the ring open and push up on the opposite sideDo not scratch the ring lands4Repeat procedure for second ringThe oil control ring is three piece design consisting of top and bottom steel rail and center expander sectionThe top rail has locating tab on the end which fits into notch (A) in the upper oil ring land of the pistonRock cylinder forward and backward and lift it from the crankcase, supporting piston and connecting rodSupport piston with Piston Support Block (PN 2870390)Remove dowel pins from crankcasePiston Removal
