Whenever service complaint is related to either the starting or charging systemsthe battery should be checked firstFollowing are three tests which can easily be madeon battery to determ ine its condit ion: OCV Test, Specific Gravity Test and Load Test

Battery voltage should be chec ked with digitaJ multitesterReadings of 12.8 volts or less require further battery testing and chargingSee charts and Load TestNOTE: Lead-acid batteries should be kept at or near full charge as possibleIf the battery is stored or used in partially charged condit ion, or with low electrolyte levels, hard crystal sulfation will form on the plates, reducing the efficiency and service life of the batteryNOTE: Use voltmeter or multimeter to test batter voltage OPEN CIRCUIT VOLTAGE State of charge 100 75 Charged 50 Charged 25 Charged Charged Maintenance Free 13.0V 12.80V 12.50V 12.20V less than 12.0V YuMicron ""
