ENGINES Stroke Engine Maintenance Ignition Timing
NOTE: Ignition timing must be checked with the engine at room temperature
1Remove ignition timing inspection plug from recoil starter housing2Remove right side body panelSee Body Panel Removal, Chapter 23Connect timing strobe light to spark plug high tension lead according to the manufacturer's instructions4Install tachometer in the manner described by the manufacturer5Shift transmission to the neutral position and set parking brake6Start engine, slowly increase engine speed to specified timing RPM while directing the strobe light at the timing marks in the inspection holeThe marks should align7Check the ignition advanceIt should advance smoothly from idle up to the specified timing RPMNOTE: If the marks do not align at the specified RPM, the timing must be adjusted using the following procedure:
