BODY, STEERING AND SUSPENSION Steering Stop Adjustments Steering Stops Adjust steering stops (A) so that the wheels turn maximum of 40 from the straight ahead positionRear Axle Bend The rear axle shaft is hardened to approximately 3" to 4" (7.6 to 10 cm) from the outer endsThis allows the shaft to bend in case of impact or accidentSmall amounts of axle runout can be straightened using blocks, hydraulic press, and dial indicatorCAUTION: Do not use heat on any part of the axleHeat will destroy the temper and cause the shaft to become brittle
A-Arm Replacement 1Lay pad or tarp on floor and carefully tip vehicle onto its side with the A-arm to be replaced in the upright positionNOTE: To be sure fuel spillage does not occur, only perform this operation when the fuel tank is half full or less2Remove cotter pin from ball joint stud at wheel end of A-arm and loosen nut until it is flush with end of stud3Using soft face hammer, tap nut to loosen A-arm from boltRemove nut and A-arm from hub strut assemblyCAUTION: On 4x4 models, when removing the A-arm from the ball jOint stud, do not over extend the CV axle assemblyOver extension may disengage the CV jointIf the CV joint is disengaged, it must be disassembled and repairedTo prevent over extension, tie wire between the lower strut casting pinch bolt and the inner axle universal joint4Loosen two bolts on A-arm tube by alternating each about 13 of the way until A-arm can be removed5Examine A-arm shaftReplace if wornDiscard hardware6Insert A-arm shaft into new A-armNOTE: On 4x4 models the CV joint shields will need to be attached to the A-armSee III
