5-22 ENGINE TOP END Camshaft
KACR Inspection
The Kawasaki Automatic Compression Release (KACR) momentarily opens the exhaust valves on the compression stroke at very low speedsThis allows some of the compression pressure to escape, making it easy to turn over the engine during startingDue to the simplicity of the mechanism, no periodic maintenance is neededThere are only two symptoms of problems with the KACR mechanism [A]: compression is not released during starting, and compression is released during running(1) If compression is not released during starting, the weights are not returning to their rest positionRemove the camshaft (see Camshaft Removal)Remove the KACR unitVisually inspect the springIf damaged, deformed, or missing, replace the springRemove the spring and move the weights back and forthIf the weights do not move smoothly, replace the KACR unitAlso inspect the exhaust rocker arm for any damage, and replace the rocker arm if necessary[A] Rest Position (compression is released) [B] Weights [C] Spring (2) If compression is released while the engine is running, the weights are not swinging outRemove the spring and move the weights back and forthIf the weights do not move easily from the retracted position, replace the KACR unitAlso inspect the exhaust rocker arm for any damage, and replace the rocker arm if necessary[A] Running Position (compression is not released) [B] Weights [C] Spring
