Tooth Contact Adjustment OTooth contact location is influenced by drive gear position more than by driven gear position Clean any dirt and oil off the bevel gear teeth Apply checking compound to or teeth on the output driven bevel gearCorrect Tooth Contact Patterns (No adjustment is requ ired) Bottom

OApply checking compound to the teeth in thin, even coat with fairly stiff paint brushff painted too thickly, the exact tooth pattern may not appearo The checking compound must be smooth and firm with the consistency of tooth pasteOSpecial compounds are available from automotive supply stores for the purpose of checking differential gear tooth patterns and contactUse this for checking the bevel gearsDr ve Heel Toe 'tt

Top Heel

Turn the output driven shaft for or turns in the drive and reverse (coast) directions, while creating drag on the drive bevel gear shaft Check the drive pattern and coast pattern of the bevel gear teethThe tooth contact patterns of both drive and coast sides should be centrally located between the top and bottom of the tooth, and little closer to the toe of the tooth If the tooth contact pattern is incorrect, replace the shim(s) at the drive bevel gear and shim(s) at the driven bevel gear, following the examples shownThen erase the tooth contact patterns, and check them againAlso check the backlash every time the shims are replacedRepeat the shim change procedure as necessary
