Cylinder Compression Measurement NOTE
OUse the battery which is fully charged Remove the air cleaner cover (see Air Cleaner Cover Removal in Frame chapter) Warm up the engine thoroughly, and stop the engine Remove the spark plug (see Spark Plug Removal in Electrical System chapter) Attach the compression gauge [A] and adapter [B] firmly into the spark plug holeSpecial ToolsCompression Gauge: 57001-221 Compression Gauge Adapter, M10 1.0: 57001-1486 Hold the throttle wide open and crank the engine with the electric starter or the recoil starter several timesWhen the gauge stops rising, stop cranking and read the gaugeCylinder Compression (Usable Range) Electric Starter: 320560 kPa (3.35.7 kgfcm2, 4781 psi) 240 rmin (rpm)

The following table should be consulted if the obtainable compression reading is not within the usable rangeProblem Diagnosis Remedy (Action) Cylinder Carbon accumulation on piston, cylinder Remove the carbon deposits compression is head, and in combustion chamber possibly and replace damaged parts if higher than usable due to damaged valve stem oil seal andor necessaryrange damaged piston oil rings (This may be indicated by white exhaust smoke)Incorrect cylinder head gasket thicknessReplace the gasket with standard part
